This is what I imagine Empire of the Sun would be like if they were playing with sedatives.

I was listening to this interview from 1998 with Ray Charles this morning for some writing I’m doing for work. I hadn’t heard it before. It’s really, really just lovely. If you’ve got some time this morning — and want something streaming through your headphones — check it out.

"Kids who learn two languages young are better able to learn abstract rules and to reverse rules that they’ve already learned. They’re less likely to have difficulty choosing between conflicting possibilities when there are two possible responses that both present themselves. They’re also better at figuring out what other people are thinking, which is probably because they have to figure out which language to use every time they talk to somebody in order to communicate."

Say goodbye to summer skies and open-air skateparks. See more of Steven Holl’s Cité de l’Océan et du Surf.

Where museum merges with landscape. We feel the beach.

This reminds me of a dream I had when i was little that involved dinosaurs walking above me on huge window panes.

Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.’ – Lisa St. Aubin de Teran

When I walked in to the house my host parents were tucked into the breakfast nook sharing a forty of Chilean beer, it was perfectly romantic. It made me think, for a moment, I could be old and happy and in love still and drinking beer on a Friday night in a house on the river by the sea.

Recently I have found myself in a re-occcuring conversation, wherein the participants try to examine how we are supposed to find our happiness. In a moment of dreamy delusion I felt that something would change and I would see the planets in the universe of my mind all align, Frosts’ yellow woods would whisper answers about paths, and all doubts would crawl along the coast of Chile, and into the Pacific.

Quite on the contrary I have never been so confused or filled with healthy doubt in my entire life but here is what I do know. My family is incredible. My friends wonderful. I knew that before I left but the distance takes everything in my mind and strips it down to the most essential because that’s all you get as a foreigner, and at the moment all I can feel is gratitude.

Apparently Chilean beer brings out my sentimental side.
